ARET 1200 – Materials and Applications

Common materials in construction and the impact they do or don’t have on the environment was an integral part of this course. We learned about using locally sourced materials, using sustainable alternatives, and embodied energy in materials. The knowledge learned from this class enabled us to realize the lasting impact material choices in construction have on the environment.

ARET 1300 – Building Technology

FINAL GRADE: A+

This first year ARET course was the beginning of my interest in sustainable design. The project for this course was to design an affordable net zero duplex housing project. Throughout this course, we learned about different sustainable technologies such as solar panels, super insulated walls, and passive solar design. These elements are the key focus points that I can use when designing with sustainability in mind.

ARET 2400 – Sustainable Site Planning and Development

This course heavily focused on large scale sustainable design. We learned that if site planning is done properly, it can eliminate the need for private vehicles. We were taught about walkability within cities and how high density, mixed-use buildings are better for the environment. We were taught to plan with the building site in mind and to explore the impact that a building can have on a location.

FINAL GRADE: A+

ARET 3300 – Building Design

This course dove into design philosophies of a mixed-use building. Green building rating systems like LEED and the Living Building Challenge was taught to further give us more information on how to design sustainably, and how it innovates the construction industry. Using the clients list of minimum requirements, a proposed design was created that had to meet certain LEED and Living Building Challenge requirements. This course gave me knowledge on sustainable design aspects that can be incorporated on any future project.
